CHAPTER TEN - JANUARY, 1992
We talked on the phone late on New Year’s day for almost an hour and a half. During this conversation, she told me a lot more about the man she had been seeing. I did not ask how intimate they had been in case I did not like the answer, but it was a question which constantly caused me some anxiety. In truth, I did not mind how many friends she had as long as she reserved her love and intimacy just for me. This, coupled with the re-emergence of Dave, made me feel distinctly uneasy and uncertain about my future with Carol. If I had not been so much in love with her, I think I would have ended our relationship at that time. One little sign of encouragement came when Carol told me that she was thinking of changing her telephone number to prevent Dave from continuing to call her. Since I knew Carol so well, I realised that there was every possibility that she would not actually do anything about changing her number, but, at least, she was thinking about it.
I was disappointed when she told me that our planned holiday in February may not be for the whole week and perhaps just a few days. I could see what she was doing. She had an appointment during the week, which I felt certain was a deliberate attempt to reduce our time together. Given a little more time, she would probably find reasons why we could not go away at all. She knew that she was letting me down and said she felt guilty but, what I could not understand was why she did not realise that she was really letting herself down. After all, my suggestion for the holiday in the first place, was because she wanted to get away from the cold, British winter to a warmer climate and wanted something to look forward to. She was infuriating at times when she implied that, in seeing me, she was doing me a favour. She was far more blind than me, at times.
I was even more despondent when she told me that Dave had been to her house and with her permission. This was the woman who hated him so much, wanted vengeance for being abandoned by him and had vowed never to see him again. She had even asked my advice as to what she could do to him as an act of revenge, but I had managed to convince her that she should not seek to do such things. Why could she not see that he had already wasted far too much of her life? Even she could not ignore the fact that he was still married and did not seem to be making any effort to start divorce proceedings. I was certain that, in Carol, he saw her as being no more than a mistress and she was worthy of a much better status.
My only consolation was that Carol had said she would go with me to the theatre on the following Saturday.
